More Countries Will Soon Be Able To Support iPhone 5

An announcement by Apple CEO Time Cook revealed that 60 operators will likely be approved as early as next week to provide LTE support to the iPhone 5. Currently, there are 24 worldwide carriers who support the device with LTE. The expansion to more carriers will mean that more customers are able to enjoy the speed of 4G LTE on their devices.

The announcement revealed that over 300 million users will be affected by the expansion, including those in Finland, Denmark and several Middle Eastern countries. The company’s launch of its iPhone 5 occurred in September 2012, and rollout to over 100 countries was complete by December, making it the fastest rollout of any iPhone device in the company’s history.

Presidential Debate A Gentlemen’s Event On Television – Not So Online

Social media users have been posting and tweeting incessantly since Tuesday night’s Presidential debate. And while both candidates exhibited restraint and were able to maintain their composure, it appears the opposite was true with internet service providers Houston. Perhaps it’s the anonymous nature of the internet that tempts users to throw caution to the wind when posting their opinions. Or perhaps it simply a strong feeling about the state of the economy.  Whatever the reason, some tweets and updates were certainly not for the faint of heart.

Over on sites like Tumblr, things took a more humorous turn, as memes depicting Romney’s now-famous ‘binders full of women’ statement appeared and then proceeded to circulate the web. Gifs depicting debate audience members napping and looped gestures by debate participants were also popular.

Do You Really Need To Buy Computer Screen Cleaner At The Store?

There are thousands of products designed to make our lives easier. For example, instead of making a cake from scratch, we can just buy a box of cake mix. So it would only make sense that if our computer screens need cleaning, we can compare prices online with internet service providers Indianapolis, and then get cleaning spray at our local computer store, right? Wrong! Actually, computer screen cleaner can easily be made at home.

All you need is rubbing alcohol, distilled water, and a spray bottle to put the solution in. Luckily, the alcohol and spray bottle can be had for very cheap at your local dollar store. The most effective screen cleaning solution will be one part alcohol and one part water. Once in the spray bottle, it only needs to be shaken, and it’s ready for use.

The Importance Of Internet Access For All Communities

You may have heard of the National Broadband Stimulus Program, an initiative put in place in order to get Internet Service Providers Jacksonville to rural and underserved communities. But progress has been slow since its 2009 inception, and the numbers say it all, with less than 4% of rural counties meeting the stimulus’s speed goals.

In the case of rural internet, having emergency services access is critical, as is an understanding of the logistics of rural communities. For example, emergency crews will take longer to respond to an event in a rural community than they may in a city center. But when a community has internet, instantaneous communication can occur.

The internet can also help rural communities with managing their health. Instead of traveling to a larger city, rural residents can go online and get advice from medical professionals without ever having to leave their homes, which is the ultimate in convenience.

How To Avoid Spyware

Hackers are sneaky. In an attempt to steal your personal information, they can insert viruses and spyware into just about anything, even an image on a web page. The information they obtain could include your passwords, login information and surfing habits. And even the least seemingly-harmful spyware can cost you in the form of your computer having to use more resources.

Get Defensive

Taking action which will prevent the installation of spyware without your knowledge is the first step to avoiding it. Here are a few tips:

Windows Update is a great tool that, when set up for automatic downloading, can ensure that your computer is always protected against spyware threats. Knowing your sources before you download shareware will ensure that you only download programs from trusted sites.

Installing anti-virus software such as AVG, Malwarebytes or Microsoft Defender and then keeping it running in the background while your computer is on is a great way to prevent unwanted spyware.

Having a firewall can be yet another tool you can add to your anti-virus and malware scanners. A firewall puts an additional barrier between hackers and your computer. If you have a home wireless network for your internet, you may also want to consider using a separate router.

Microsoft Seeking Code Monkeys For Possible Xbox Skype Dev

While there were no official announcements about any developments, some Microsoft job postings at the beginning of the week hinted at the Microsoft development of Skype products for the Xbox. And rumor seems to be becoming more of a reality today as more details about the postings are revealed. Four openings on the company’s site called for developers who can help ‘bring the Skype experience on to the web’. This has led many to believe that it’s a sign that Skype and the Xbox are ready to team up. Other details of the job openings included a desire for coders having a strong technical background with the development of client or embedded software. This gives further clues about a possible team-up, but it isn’t yet clear whether the project will be stand-alone or not.

The De-Mystification Of The DVD

If you’re not technically-inclined and have ever gone shopping for blank DVDs, you were probably surprised by the many choices in front of you. Abbreviations like DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW most likely left you wondering why on earth anyone would want to put themselves through this technical torture.

You can avoid unnecessary money spent by knowing what these terms mean. DVDs come in two standard formats; the DVD-R, and the DVD+R/+RW.

The DVD-R(W)

The “R” in this DVD type stands for “read-only”, which means that anything recorded onto the DVD can be read, but not altered in any way.

The DVD+R(W)

“RW” for this DVD type stands for “read/write” and means that information recorded on them can be read and erased, and new information recorded. And adding information to this type of DVD can be done with ‘drag and drop’, much like you would place information onto a portable USB stick.

Knowing Which DVD Type To Buy

Because not all DVD players will be able to read all DVD types, it’s important to find out what format of DVD your home player can read before you buy or burn. This will either be NTSC or PAL. As well, check the speed rating of the disc, as this will tell you how long it will take to burn information on the DVD. Any DVDs you purchase should be rated at or above the speed of the DVD drive on your computer.

CISPA Rewrite Complete, But Worries Continue

Although the rewrite of the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing And Protection Act is now complete, and, it has been stated, is not meant to endanger the privacy of Americans, many are still saying it’s not enough. Only minor tweaks to the act were made, leaving a legislation that is still very broad in scope. Experts are saying that should the legislation go forward – a vote is expected next week – it will allow the National Security Agency to access sensitive information such as e-mail content and internet history. Many advocacy groups are protesting the legislation, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and TechFreedom. The issue with the legislation lies, essentially, with one phrase: “notwithstanding any other provision of law”. Including this phrase would allow the legislation past the privacy policies of web companies, wiretap laws, medical records and many more rules designed to protect information.

Using A Wireless Keyboard With Your New Laptop

To many who are used to typing on a regular computer keyboard, having to switch to the smaller keyboard of a laptop can be incredibly frustrating. But wireless keyboards are available which can allow you the same ease and comfort that you enjoy while typing on your computer.

Check Your Laptop

First of all, you must check to see if your laptop has the capability for a wireless keyboard. This will require checking for Bluetooth or RF capability. Looking online for your laptop’s make and model should tell you whether or not you can enjoy the freedom of a wireless keyboard.

Avoid Interference

Before you install your new wireless keyboard, ensure that its receiver is located 8 or more inches away from interference from items like computer monitors, CPUs, metal objects, fluorescent lights and electric fans. Also ensure that the laptop is 8 inches from the keyboard, and that the keyboard and receiver have a direct line of sight between them. Then, install the batteries for the keyboard. The compartment should be located under it.

Installing The Keyboard

You will have to insert the CD that came with your keyboard in order to install the drivers. As well, you will have to plug in the keyboard’s receiver to your laptop via USB. Your keyboard will then be detected by your laptop, which will configure it automatically. If you are using Bluetooth, your keyboard can be activated by right clicking on the keyboard icon and pairing it with your laptop.

Facebook’s Instagram Acquisition Not The Norm

Yesterday’s purchase of Instagram by social media giant Facebook will not be something the company does on a regular basis, said Mark Zuckerberg. The $1 billion acquisition marks the company’s first investment into a high-user service, and Facebook plans to build and grow the service independently. Instagram is a photo-sharing service which features filters that allow users to give any photo they’ve taken with their mobile device a vintage look.  Many eyebrows were raised by this move, including analysts who communicated its similarity to those purchases which occurred in the late 1990s during the ‘internet bubble’. But some are saying it was a smart move, as Instagram was Facebook’s biggest competitor in the photo sharing arena, something that is one of the most popular activities among Facebook’s over 800 million members. Zuckerberg says that many Instagram features will remain intact, including the ability to post to other social networks, and the choice to not share Instagram photos on Facebook.

Sharing Music On Facebook

Music can add a lot to your Facebook experience. By being able to share your favourite tunes, personal creations or using apps to listen to your music, you can add a layer to the connections you have with those on your friends list and enhance their Facebook experience as well. In addition to sharing music by pasting links to videos on the web, you can use a number of Facebook apps to share your music.

Spotify

This app allows for the access to your music library from where ever you happen to be, and includes many options for users who want to share their music with others who have this app installed. It isn’t free, but offers a number of music sharing options.

Music

This app lets you either upload or link directly to audio and video that are already stored on your computer. As with Spotify, once a track is uploaded, you can play your own tunes or listen to what others on your list who have the app have uploaded.

MixPod

Audiophiles will love this app, which allows you to create a playlist of your favorite music videos. When used with Facebook, this app lets you post your playlists on your wall for your friends to enjoy.

Google Found Guilty Of Misleading Ads By Australian Court

Search giant Google received a ruling of guilty for the breaching of trade law today by the Australian Federal Court. Last year, a ruling by a lower court was handed down that Google was not responsible for any breaches by its advertisers of the country’s Trade Practices Act. But three Federal Court judges overturned that ruling unanimously, saying that the company was guilty of misleading and deceiving consumers. The deception centered around four ads that appeared on the Google Australia web site, ads which advertisers used competitor names in order to get their own ads to appear. It was decided that people searching for the competitor info would likely be misled by the practice. Although there will be no fine to Google, the company was ordered to make changes that would prevent this from happening again, as well as pay court costs to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Cleaning a Laptop Screen With Products In Your Home

If your laptop gets used a lot in a day, your screen is probably filled with fingerprints and other smudges that can make using your device not only annoying, but possibly unhealthy. Many types of bacteria can reside in and on devices like laptops that can result in nasty colds and other infections if the laptop isn’t cleaned regularly.

Some people wonder if they really have to go out and buy expensive cleaners specifically for laptops. The truth is that you don’t have to; you could have ingredients in your household that could help you keep your laptop’s screen clean.

A gentle cleaning solution can be made from distilled water alone, or by adding white vinegar in a 50/50 mix if heavier cleaning is needed. Simply place the water or mixture into a small spray bottle, and using a very soft cloth (like an old t-shirt or eyeglass cloth), just moisten the cloth. Too much liquid can result in this extra leaking into your laptop and damaging your screen. When wiping the screen, a gentle and even pressure is best. Wiping in rapid circles will usually help to eliminate any streaks.

Some warnings include not using any cloth composed of wood fibers, such as paper towels, never scrubbing your screen and considering disposable wipes for LCD screens if the option isn’t available to make your own cleaner.

Do Not Track Could Come To U.S.

Regulators in the United States want a “Do Not Track” system in place by the end of 2012. The FTC’s report on privacy recommendations was released yesterday, but was considered by privacy advocates to not be nearly as strict as it should be. The FTC says that this ‘lack of force’ in the report is due to the limits under which it must operate. Therefore, it has begun to put pressure on internet companies to adopt privacy policies that would do the job. The fifty-seven page report was created and released as a reply to consumers who feel that some well-known internet companies are collecting an uncomfortable amount of information from them, among them Facebook and Twitter. In addition, the FTC is looking to Congress to pass legislation that would allow for complete transparency to consumers, as well as giving them the power to stop such action as they deem necessary.

Network Improvements By ATT Uverse Total Over $16 Billion

The wired and wireless networks in Abilene, Texas received a boost of over $16 billion from 2009 to 2011. And the improvements made optimized network performance, along with mobile broadband coverage for customers in that area. This is the latest report from the ATT Uverse web site, which has listed several of its network upgrades across the United States. The upgrades included adding capacity so that customers would experience more reliability when using the mobile network, adding a new cell site to increase coverage, and upgrading 9 existing sites to ensure the delivery of fast mobile internet. The improvements the company has made in the last two years were recognized recently by CNN Money. The company’s network enhancements in 2011 tripled in number from the year before, reaching 150,000 enhancements in the nation.

How To Avoid Overheating Your Laptop

A laptop that’s overheated can cause several processes from running correctly, which can mean a reduction in the quality of your machine. If you conduct business on your laptop, overheating can result in costly downtime that directly affects your income.

There are several simple solutions that can be applied at no additional cost that can keep your laptop running at its optimal and expected speed.

How You Use It

Do you place your laptop on hard or soft surfaces? This can make a big difference to the internal temperature of your machine. Using your laptop by placing it on a cushion will cause the heat to become trapped in the cushion, as well as cause the airflow to be obstructed.

How Long You Leave It On

Laptops, just like personal computers, aren’t meant to be on around the clock. Your machine needs time to cool off, and an easy way to allow it to do this is to place it in standby mode when you aren’t using it. Not only will this save power, but it will also result in less heat being released from your laptop.

Maintenance

Although laptops are the enclosed and mobile form of a personal computer, they still do need cleaning. Dirt will build up on and in the air vents of a laptop, and so regular cleaning is definitely necessary. The dust can be removed with a small electric cleaner which can be found online or at your local office supply store, or you can purchase a can of compressed air that’s been made especially for cleaning electronics.

Federal Reserve Now Tweeting

The U.S. Federal Reserve announced yesterday that it now has a new channel on Twitter – @federalreserve – from which it would be attempting to improve communication with Americans by tweeting Federal Reserve Board News. Its first tweet was about the Reserve’s release this week of a report about mobile banking, which contained a number of interesting statistics, including the fact that one out of five Americans are now using mobile banking primarily to check their balances and monitor recent transactions. The U.S. Federal Reserve represents the financial backbone of the economy, and aims to keep the public updated with its latest speeches, reports and press releases with its Twitter presence. However, those interested in following the Reserve via Twitter are advised to check the web site for their latest news, as this is where happenings will be updated first.

Freeing Up The Space On Your iPod

If you have an iPod, then you own a piece of technology that is capable of storing thousands of .mp3s. But that space can quickly be reduced, especially if you can’t get through a day without it and love to download all sorts of music. Eventually, the time will come where you need to thin out your .mp3 herd to make room for new music. Here’s how to do that.

Open iTunes

iTunes is the way to remove music from any iPod. But in order to ensure your .mp3s are removed from your iPod, you will first have to open the application and delete them from your iTunes library.

Finding The Library

Your iTunes library will be located in the panel on the left side of your iPod’s screen and will be a tab. Clicking it will reveal all of the music stored on your iPod by artist, genre, album and songs.

Scroll Through And Delete

Once your library has been opened, all you have to do is scroll through your list and look for the music you wish to remove. Removing one song is as easy as clicking it to highlight, and then clicking delete. Or, you can right click on the song file and choose delete from the menu. You can also choose to delete entire playlists, which will appear in the left pane. While you can delete those playlists you created manually, you will not be able to delete those that iTunes created automatically, such as Top Played or Recently Added lists. Deleting playlists will not delete the songs in them from your iPod.

Syncing

Once you’ve gone through your list and completed your deletions, you will need to sync your iPod by connecting it to your computer. When that’s completed, you then will have more space to store your music.

High Court Sides With Artists In Copyright Flap

Britain’s High Court expressed its solidarity with the music industry and Digital Economy Act this week in the country’s latest struggle for the regulation of peer-to-peer file sharing. The Act requires all internet providers to identify and restrict access to the internet to users they suspect are downloading and sharing audio and video content illegally with a multi-step process involving several escalating warnings, with the possible result of complete blockage of internet access the activity continues. Internet providers seem to be worried that the regulations set forth by the Digital Economy Act will harm the right to free expression, but creative groups say that regulation is badly needed to reduce the amount of illegal sharing of their content online. In addition, they say that the Digital Economy Act will help teach young consumers about the damaging effects of piracy.

How To Save Gas With Smart Phone Apps

The price of gas seems to be changing by the minute. And you may have found a gas station that’s a little out of your way, but that offers you a deal when you need to fill up. But is it really worth the drive? Could you be doing something else, such as taking it easier on the gas pedal when you drive to stretch out that last few gallons? All of these questions can be answered when you take advantage of a few handy smart phone apps.

Gas Buddy

This app continues to be popular with travelers and penny-pinchers alike. That’s because this free app shows you nearby gas stations and their current prices as uploaded by other app users. Another app for gas prices is Cheap Gas, but it doesn’t provide the ability for users to upload prices.

GasHog

But for older cars that don’t have this option, you could be in for a lot of math. Thankfully, you don’t have to cringe over calculations if you have an iPhone and the GasHog app. All you have to do is type in your odometer miles and how much fuel your vehicle took when you last filled up for the app to figure out your miles per gallon. What To Do During Internet Blackouts

The recent protests of popular sites like Wikipedia and Reddit saw their content become completely inaccessible to internet users. While this certainly made a statement about how they feel about a free and open internet, life did go on. For those that use these blacked out sites on a regular basis, it probably caused quite an inconvenience. This leads to the question: what do the rest of us do during internet protests when our favourite sites aren’t available? Thankfully, there are alternatives.

Wikipedia Alternatives

The popular reference site sees over 10 million accesses per hour. But it’s not the only all-in one source. Alternatives to Wikipedia include the online Encyclopedia Britannica, which offers two-week access at no cost. Free alternatives are Citizendium and Scholarpedia.

Social Media Sites

What if Facebook went black for a day? If you plan ahead by signing up with and building your network on other social media sites, even the longest blackout doesn’t have to be a big deal. And, you could discover new ways to communicate in the meantime, such as Google Hangouts, which allows you to create an online room and invite your friends to enjoy some quality face time via webcam and text chat.

Pew Research Report Reveals Interesting Data About Social Media Users

According to a recent Pew Research report, social network users are taking the time to manage the privacy and friend lists of their accounts. The report found that, among all social networking users, it is the women and younger users who are indulging in better account management. And the phenomenon doesn’t seem to be based on the number of friends one has; sixty-three percent of users deleted friends from their lists in 2011. The report results were based on the feedback from over 2,000 adults who participated in a survey over a two month time period. Interestingly, women were more likely than men to delete friends and keep their profile privacy at the highest level. Regrettable postings affected fifteen percent of men and eight percent of women. While the results of the survey are interesting, some say that they are one-dimensional, and did not take into account the social media network’s business practices.

Uploading Your Video To YouTube In 3 Steps

Want to join the millions of people who upload their videos to YouTube? It’s actually much easier than you think. Once you’ve created your video, either with your web cam or other video recorder, and then edited it (an easy program is Windows Movie Maker), you’re ready to show it to the world.

Step One: Registration

If you don’t already have a YouTube account, you will have to create one. This is very easy and takes just a few minutes. It’s also free. Tip: if you have an email account with Google, signup will be even easier.

Step Two: Uploading

Uploading your video is as easy as going to the “Account Settings” section of your account. The upload link can be found on the upper right. Simply click it, and then browse for the video you’ve created on your computer. It can take up to 30 minutes for a video to load in addition to processing time, so once you’ve begun the process, don’t click your browser’s ‘back’ button to try again, as this will interrupt the upload. Step Three: Description And Sharing If you are looking to make your video completely public, using lots of relevant keywords along with a detailed title and description will help people to find it. When building your keyword list, think of what someone may type in when they’re looking for a video like yours. In addition to public sharing, you can opt to make your video private. Private links allow for only those who are sent the link to view it. But be aware that if your contacts share your link with their own friends, that it will become public.

Understanding DSL Providers

When you think of high speed internet, the last connection on your mind might be the kind you get from DSL providers. But did you know that a DSL connection can actually be plenty to handle whatever you do online. DSL speeds usually range from between 768 kb and 1.5 Mbps per second for lower-priced packages. However, many companies now offer faster DSL connections that come in at between 3 and 7 Mbps, which is close to a cable internet connection’s average speed in the lower-priced packages. There are some differences between the two connections. One is the distance you live from your DSL company’s headquarters. The farther away you are, the slower your connection could be. Cable internet bandwidth is also shared with those in your area, meaning that you could experience slow internet during times of peak usage when many people are online at the same time.

Further details of the extension agreement were not made available to the public.

Clear Wireless Internet Chosen For Free Mobile Broadband Service

FreedomPop, a new wave telecom company created by the co-founder of Skype, has selected the Clear Wireless Internet network as the source who will power its free mobile broadband service. The strategic wholesale relationship will allow FreedomPop to meet its goal of free access for all in the United States when it launches in the second half of 2012. The company will pay wholesale rates for access to the wireless network, but other details of the agreement remain unknown. Clearwire’s Senior Vice President of Wholesale says that the partnership is key, as it offers a service model that is unique to wireless broadband, and will give it a much-needed shake up. Clear wireless currently services over 100 million U.S. customers, with plans for its 4G LTE advanced-ready network to come online in the coming months.
